We had a wonderful time in England the last week of June for a pair of concerts with Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete, Getachew Mekurya and Mulatu Astatke.
The day after a long and intense rehearsal, the Barbican Center on June 27 gave us a sold-out house of 1800, and you couldn't ask for a better audience.
The next day we drove out to the gigantic Glastonbury Festival and followed Buddy Guy on the Jazz/World Stage. This was a different audience, not as familiar with the Ethiopian sounds, but I would say we got to them eventually.
You can see the first 30 minutes of the live BBC broadcast on their web site. If you want to see the rest, email them in the box below the clip and the photos. We start with three of Mulatu's tunes, then move on to Alemayehu's "Addis Ababa Bete," then the clip runs out.
